‘I call upon the nation to take a pledge to make India the skill capital of the world’ –Narendra Modi

Yes, our prime minister definitely understands the importance of skill development for the progress of the country. And it is heartening to see that a number of steps are being taken in this direction by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). 15th July marked the first anniversary of the ‘Skill India’ initiative and also saw the inauguration of the first edition of the India Skills Competition by our president Shri Pranab Mukherjee. This was a national competition that aimed towards selecting India’s top participants for the biennial World Skills International Competition to be held in 2017 at Abu Dhabi.

The MSDE was assisted by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in conducting close to 80 regional competitions across 24 skills like hair styling, graphic designing etc. From these, 4820 candidates were selected for the inaugural Skill India Competition that concluded with its closing ceremony on 17th July. The event was a massive success and a big step ahead in making India a hotspot for variety of skills.

Other initiatives that were undertaken

Apart from the competition, the MSDE also launched other initiatives in its attempt to empower the youth of the country.

1. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 2.0 (PMKVY)
2. India International Skill Centres
3. India Skills Online
4. Labour Management Information System (LMIS)

Last year, PMKVY 1.0 saw the training of close to 20 lakh youth. The PMKVY 2.0 plans to train a total of 1 crore youths in the coming four years and things seem to be on track as it has secured an approval of Rs. 12,000 crores from the cabinet. This will help the MSDE to scale up the activities of the PMKVY.

Training centers are vital for imparting the skills to the youth and the event also took this into consideration. Announcement was made that 50 India International Skill Centers would be opened by the end of this year. To begin this development, the President launched 15 such centers ranging across 8 different sectors like Retail, Healthcare
and Hospitality.

How private institutes and training centers are playing their part?
